Your Sales Letter Sucks

July 31st, 2009

When I type on here it is sometime with haste and quite often with a lack of precision, much to my girlfriend’s annoyance ( I am sure I got that apostrophe wrong). My failures are inconsequential compared to an actual sales letter we received recently for our property business.

I have blanked out the errors to protect the stupid (and me getting in the poo :-) )

Just to give you an idea I don’t live in Scot Coldfield (Remember I bought from them so they know where I live) and my name is Not Mr Raza, nor that of my other half.

The moral of the story is, if you are going to spend lots of hard earned on a direct marketing campaign then at least check it. This one I got looked like it was penned by someone with a very bad grasp of English, littered with errors which makes me think the company must have the same lack of attention to detail.

cheers

Business Ideas and Inspiration

December 5th, 2008

I don’t have a lot of time on my hands with all the is going on my end, but I still love to look for new ideas and inspiration…..even if 99% of the time I do FA with the idea.

Shane over at Revenue Addict is one to watch for nice ideas and some useful articles and one that caught my eye and is now firmly on my to read list is Springwise: new business ideas for entrepreneurial minds.

Shane also mentions Tim Ferriss, the author of Four Hour Work Week, which I have recently read and am about reread and make heavy notes. Unlike a lot of self help books this one actually gives examples and a guide on how to go about changing your life with lots of tips from outsourcing to actually deciding what you want to do with your life. Tim Ferris has a blog also.

It’s not on all the time but Dragon’s Den here in the UK is a must, to get ideas from the people asking for funding and in many cases things you should never ever do.

Channel 4 has a series The Secret Millionaire which is fantastic at grounding you and seeing what is wrong with the world and in many cases is just outside your front door.

From a property point of view I like some of the programs like Grand Designs, and Property Ladder.

The Apprentice is always worth a laugh, although it surprises me how flaming stupid some of the people are, like the dude who priced fresh lobsters at £4 each and all his team mates who never questioned this, like they had never seen one on a menu in their entire lives!

Finally getting out there and meeting people in similar games even if just on a social level is a must and very inspiring.

Wheel Of Life

October 27th, 2008

Ok some may think this is a bit gay, but to them thar nay sayers.. I say “bollocks”.

The wheel of life was described to me last week and that same day I went to the pub (great excuse :-) ) to start my ‘wheel of life’.

The process is not very difficult and does not need to be made very complex. By doing it you can see which parts of your life are not as you would like them, and you then set small goals to make each of the areas of your life that much better.

This is how you do your wheel of life (and in turn set goals, feel more confident about negative areas etc etc)

1. Draw a large cross on a page and from the centre outwards on each spoke make ten little marks. Now draw another cross in between the other lines, (45 degrees). For the hard of learning, see completed, made up image below.

2. Create 8 categories that you feel are important to you and assign one to each spoke.

3. Score each of those in a gut feeling type of way out of 10, with one being “I look awful” and ten being “as happy as a pig in shi…“.

4. Make some brief notes for each spoke, then in detail write down the things that would make that a 10, making the negatives a positive. For example, instead of saying “Never feel lethargic” write “Always feel energetic”, subtle difference but it it works. You will find many things seem to fall in multiple categories (or at least I did)

5. Now you have your list, write a action plan to move each of your scores upwards towards the outside of the wheel. Be specific, these are your life goals, there are likely to be lots and lots.

6. Go do some of the things each day, that should be easier as you now know what it needed as opposed to knowing that something (god know what) is needing to be done.

I hope it works for you, but go on give it a go!

Gray Wolf Talking Poo?

April 10th, 2008

I had a post all lined up to talk about “calling people out”, which was inspired by The Wolf, re Seth Godin, but I have scratched that in favour of actually calling someone out.

As the title of this post says, at this point I think Michael Gray is talking shite when he says that bloggers, unless uber big names, should quit blogging as they are just regurgitating the already over blogged about news.

Maybe it is rather nice bit of linkbait, but like every man in the known world, if you see a sign that says “wet paint” you have to touch it, or “hot surface” you have to try it to see if it really is hot.

Well GW says that seo bloggers should step away from the keyboard, here’s why you should not (quick thoughts):

    1. It’s your right to blog, to do whatever you like.
    2. You should not be put off by a killjoy.
    3. You have to start somewhere, if you are serious and passionate about something then don’t let anyone turn you off.
    4. People write in different styles and have different hooks, find your hook and write (if you can be arsed), and some people will prefer your coverage of the same old news. I have canned people from my feed readers because they simply bore me!
    5. Stick to your guns, all the successful people I know have focus and have not deviated from what they wanted to do, even in the face of the nay sayers.
    6. Have fun!
    7. If they don’t like you they can turn your feed off or read somewhere else, so screw em!

Now here is a disclaimer, I may have just fallen for the link bait, and the reason I have bitten is that I respect GW immensely, always have, so when someone you respect talks poo you need to prod them. :-)

Some of you will know DougS (real name Doug Scott). If you dont he is a loud, brash, Geordi who is quite successful and I class him as a good mate.

If he can get past the boredom his blog will be a good place to get some good opinions on what is going on the aff/merchant and business world.

Remember that name from the past, you know the man….Lazerzubb wmw profile. Well word on the street is that he has entered the world of having and running a blog.

If you dont know the name or the person I suggest you find out, he always had a real business insight and that is proven by some of the people I know he works and partners with, some of the biggest names there are.

So take a look at Hello Martin, if he keeps up the pace it will be one to add to Bloglines and well worth a read.
